Units of Study: Changing the World Writing Persuasive Speeches

As an educator, I navigate the creation, organization, and interrelation of knowledge and skills within my subject area, facilitating connections with other disciplines when suitable. Reflecting upon my teaching methodology and evidential feedback, I adapt my strategy. One notable example is the "Writing Units of Study" initiative. Particularly in Opinion Writing, students are encouraged to change the world through persuasive speech writing. They hone their argumentative prowess, using evidence-based reasoning to convince audiences. This holistic approach helps students realize the power of their words, instilling confidence and enhancing cross-disciplinary understanding.

Lesson Plans

Lesson plans and presentation slides are instrumental in forming a significant link between content and student engagement. Our focus was to guide students in identifying their opinions, being more observant of the world, and expressing their views about societal changes. These tools assisted in recognizing influential figures who can drive these changes, making learning more interactive, relatable, and enabling a deeper understanding of how individual perspectives can impact the world.

Student Work Example

In this student sample, I worked hard with Jacob to have him consider who is audience was and how he needed to revise his speech to convince that audience.
